Humana Looking to Sell Itself?
There has recently been rumors that Humana is for sale. According to Bloomberg Cigna has approached Humana to acquire that company. The motivation behind this move is the successful Medicare Advantage products they have developed. If you live in San Antonio, you already know about their moves to develop a market in the same way WellMed has done with the Secure Horizon product. Many providers have been dropped from their network. The manner in which they have done this has had a negative effect on patients when they make these changes in June which is a time when patients cannot change products to say with their current provider.
There is also a rumor that Aetna is looking at acquiring Humana according to The Wall Street Journal. This would expand the Aetna Medicare Advantage network in Markets where Humana has a larger share of the business.
Earlier this year Humana announced that they were selling their occupational health and physical therapy business Concentra which they acquired in 2010. A move that appears focused on products that enhance their Medicare Advantage products as they acquired a Home Care division and a company that provides Nurse Practitioners for home visits. Both of these have a greater impact on their management of customers enrolled in the Advantage products by providing services at home which keep patients out of the hospital.
